As promised

I predicted it 18 months ago, when not many people knew who he was.

I bet on it almost a year ago, when he was down by 30 points in the polls.

I guaranteed it 6 months ago, when he was still trailing.

And now, it's all over.  Barack Obama is the Democratic nominee for president.  I only wish someone had taken me up on my willingness to wager $5,000 back in November that Hillary Clinton would not be the next president.  But no one did.

After one of the toughest political battles in our lifetime, Barack Obama has won the right to lose to John McCain in November.  Get ready, Barack.  Get ready for the GOP machine.

What "What Happened" does not say

Lost in the media jerk-off fest surrounding Scott McClellan's tell-all book "What Happened" is the fact that the book really doesn't say what people are suggesting it says.  It does not, for one second, suggest that the Bush Administration lied about WMDs in Iraq.  The book in fact admits that the administration truly believed that Saddam Hussein had them.  The main theme of the book, at least in regard to this issue, is that the Bush Administration believed what it needed to believe in order to stupidly make the wrong case for the war (which is what I have been saying all along).  The book ignores several facts:

-The Clinton Administration also believed Hussein had WMDs, and acted accordingly when bombing Iraq repeatedly.

-Al Gore ridiculed the first Bush Administration for not going after the "dangerous" Saddam Hussein.

-Every intelligence service in the world, including the French, thought Hussein had WMDs.

The war was the right decision.  It was sold wrong (and dishonestly), and it was handled wrong.  But the war itself was not wrong.

Let's just say Obama DOES win in November. He ain't gonna pull out the troops.

I think Obama has little chance of being President of the United States.  But for the sake of argument, let's say he does win.

If the war in Iraq was still going badly, Obama would say "I know I promised to bring the troops home.  But George Bush has screwed this up so badly that we simply can't leave now."  However, progress in Iraq is slowly starting to be made.  And by the time November rolls around, it is reasonable to assume that we will see more progress.  So what will President Obama do when he realizes he can't blame his failure to withdraw on Bush?

Nothing.

He will do nothing.  Just like the Democratic majority in Washington did nothing after being elected in 2006 on the promise to end the war.  Obama is NEVER going to be known as the man who turned Iraq over to the crazy muslims who want to kill everyone.  Never.  Not in a million years.  Just like the Democrats in Congress didn't want that same distinction after winning power.

We ain't goin' nowhere.

A few reasons why I think Big Brown is not a lock

I have to admit that Big Brown is likely to win the Triple Crown on Saturday.  But I don't agree that he's a lock, for the following reasons...

-He has a minor injury, and he has missed training time.  Missed training time is never a good thing.  And considering he will be making his 3rd start in 5 weeks, any setback has to be cause for pause.  In fact, with 4 days to go, I still think there is a slim chance his injury could worsen, and he won't run.

-He has never been tested.  And even superior horses can't always be counted on to run their top race when they face a challenge for the first time.  Big Brown has defeated all who have faced him.  But the ones who have faced him have been below-average by Triple Crown standards.  The best horse he had faced to this point is honestly probably Eight Belles, and she's dead.  He has never faced a horse the likes of Casino Drive, who I think will look him in the eye at some point in the race.

-The story would suck.  Big Brown's trainer has been caught cheating so many times that he barely denies that he's a cheater, and something just doesn't seem right about his owners.  And while horse racing often fails to produce happy endings (like when Funny Cide lost the Belmont, or when Barbaro dies), a Big Brown win would leave such a sour taste in my mouth that it just wouldn't seem right.

So, those are my reasons for thinking he's not a lock.  Obviously, if my life depended on me picking the winner, I'd pick him.  But I think a bet on Casino Drive is a good bet.

And even if Casino Drive is out of it in the final 1/8th of a mile, I will still be rooting against Big Brown.

This video shows Casino Drive's 2nd career start.  His career debut is below somewhere....

What ever happened to Yasmine Bleeth?

If anyone knows what this one-time POA has been up to, let me know.  I know she had some drug-related run-ins with the law back in the day. The photos below show her at her best and her worst.

She turns 40 later this month.

Bang, Marry, Kill

The ladies of country music....

Shania Twain

Carrie Underwood

Faith Hill

This is a tough one for me.  I seriously have no idea which one would be better in bed.  Probably not Carrie.  She's got to be at an experience disadvantage to the other two.  And since Faith seems like she might be a little bit of a bitch, I'd probably not want to marry her.  But I'd do her.  So....

Bang- Faith Hill
Marry- Shania Twain (although she will be 50 in 8 short years)
Kill- Carrie Underwood

I'm calling Bullshit!

At the beginning of the 1974 film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the audience is told that the movie is based on a true story.  Pure Bullshit.  It is loosely based on a killer from the 1950's in Wisconsin, and he never used a chainsaw.

At the beginning of the 1996 film Fargo, the audience is told that the movie is based on a true story.  Again, total Bullshit.  The Coen brothers themselves admit that the film is based on many different crimes that have taken place around the country.

Later this month, The Strangers will be released in theaters nationwide.  In the trailer for this movie, the audience is told that the film is based on a true story.  While I have yet to read whether this is true or false, I am going out on a limb right now and guaranteeing that there is not one shred of truth to this pile of crap movie.

I am sick and tired of directors lying to the audience for the purpose of increasing ticket sales.  It sickens me.  I realize that Star Wars is like the greatest money-maker in the history of American cinema, and it's impossible to prove one way or the other if Star Wars is based on actual events because it happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.  But there can only be on Star Wars.  And trying to cash in on the hype surrounded by a movie that is BOATS (Based On A True Story) is sometime difficult to resist.  But please.  No more.

Random thoughts on the presidential race

-Hillary is clearly thinking about 2012.  She wants to paint herself as a fighter who won't quit so that people remember that way in four years.  She knows, like everyone else, that the race for the Democratic nomination has been over since January 4th.

-Regardless, the "fight" for the Democratic nomination is a battle to see who gets the right to lose to John McCain.

-The race between Obama and McCain has not even started, and McCain is statistically tied with Obama in national polling.  Once the real battle starts, Obama will start to look worse to Americans.  His supporters are dillusional if they think he can win.  He has no chance in hell.  The Clintons know this.  But no one is listening.

-The war in Iraq, once considered the GOPs weakness, will end up being their strength.  Americans are not against the war.  They are against the death of American troops, and they confuse this with being against the war.  But once they are faced with the reality of bailing out and leaving Iraq before the country is safe and able to act as an ally in the war on terror, Americans will not vote to withdraw, which is essentially what a vote for Obama would be.  Americans hate failure more than they hate dead Americans.  And even if Obama were to win (which he won't) he will never pull the troops out.  He will leave the troops there, and blame it on George Bush for screwing up Iraq so badly that we have to stay.  You can mark my words on that too.

-The Democrats got elected in 2006 by promising to end the war.  They did no such thing.  Why?  Because they aren't against it.  It ain't rocket science.

-If you have an issue with the war, send your letters to this address (but you might want to wait until after January 20th, 2009):

President John McCain
1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW
Washington, D.C. 20500

NASCAR comes up for air, but will soon drown

After seeing massive declines in attendance and TV viewership in 2007, NASCAR's new television deals have temporarily stopped the bleeding for the soon-to-be-dead racing league, as slighlty more people are watching on TV in 2008.  While some misguided fans will view the improved numbers as a sign that the sport is thriving, in reality, NASCAR has completely stopped growing; a sure sign the sport will be gone in less than a decade.

Since there really are no more ridiculous rules that NASCAR hasn't already created in an attempt to make the sport more watchable to fickle fans who were destined to abandon the sport as quickly as they became obsessed with it, it is now only a matter of time.  Unless of course they decide to allow driver to shoot each other by adding some kind of road rage element to the mix.

NASCAR also has yet to reach out to African-American fans, which tells me that a G-Unit car is right around the corner.  Or perhaps we will see Jimmy Johnson grow dreads.

Will the Redskins please wake the f--k up and grab this guy?

Chris Henry is the most underrated WR in the NFL.  If he would just stop acting like a thug for a minute and concentrate on football, I think he would be one of the top pass catchers every year.  Dallas already got Pacman in a move that will ultimately put them in the Super Bowl.  If they get Henry too, the Skins are F'ed in the A.

I'm guessing tickets aren't hard to find

So, I was watching highlights of a Washington Nationals game on Sportscenter, and the Nats' seemed to be playing in front of a half-full stadium.  I wasn't sure if it was becuase the game was a blowout, or if it was becuase they were playing the Marlins.  So I got online and did a little research.

Nationals Park holds about 42,000 fans.  This year, the opening season at the new stadium, the Nationals are averaging about 28,000 fans per game, which means the stadium is about 1/3 empty every game.

Ummmm....isn't a new stadium supposed to be sold-out for at least the first half of it's debut season?  Weren't Orioles tickets impossible to come by for like 2 years?

The Nationals were drawing 23,000 at RFK.  What the fuck is going on?

I doubt this story will change anyone's opinion.

The Only Threat(s)?

If Big Brown is going to be stopped from winning the Triple Crown, I think it will be one of these two who defeats him:

Casino Drive- His mother gave birth to the last two winners of the Belmont Stakes, Jazil and Rags to Riches.  An exceptional accomplishment, to say the least.  Casino Drive has only raced once in his career.  He makes his second career start on Saturday in the Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont.  In the video below, he's the one on the lead the whole way.

Harlem Rocker- Undefeated and trained by Todd Pletcher, Harlem Rocker may or may not run in the Preakness.  He's owned by Frank Stronach, the man who owned Red Bullet, the horse who defeated the last Kentucky Derby winner ridden by Kent Desormeaux in the Preakness, Fusaichi Pegasus.  By the way, Desormeaux says Big Brown is even better than Fusaichi Pegasus.  We'll see if Harlem Rocker takes him on.
